Every great city has a barber. The truly great cities have a barber people will argue about in pubs. Bangkok has Kutz. Now, choosing a barber is a bit like choosing a mechanic for a Ferrari. Get it right and you look magnificent. Get it wrong and for the next six weeks you’re explaining to friends and family that “it’s growing on me.” I’ve been coming to Kutz on Sukhumvit 39 since arriving in Bangkok, trusting them with my Barnet (that’s British for hair, not an agricultural building). Over the years they’ve consistently performed the delicate art of removing hair from my head while somehow increasing my confidence. The staff are friendly, funny, and possess that rare talent of making you feel welcome without trying to sell you seventeen additional treatments involving charcoal, cucumber extracts, or the tears of Himalayan mountain goats. Most impressively, they also cut my five-year-old son’s hair. This is no small achievement. Attempting to cut a young boy’s hair is broadly similar to trimming a hedge during a minor earthquake. Yet somehow they manage it with patience, good humour, and remarkable accuracy. Are they the cheapest barbers in Bangkok? No. Are they the most expensive? Also no. What they are is reliably excellent. The sort of place where you sit down looking like you’ve spent three weeks lost in the jungle and leave looking vaguely employable again. In a city overflowing with options, Kutz has become my regular barber for one simple reason: they do a stellar job, they make you laugh, and I’ve never once walked out wondering whether I should immediately buy a hat. Highly recommended.

I’ve gotten faded haircuts here a couple of times from different barbers and always happy with the result!
